Fertility Awareness | Prevent pregnancy by not having sex around the time of ovulation (the release of an egg during a woman's monthly cycle) | Select "infertile" period for intercourse by calendar or body temperature. | 9 - 10% | NA |
Withdrawal | Removes his penis from the vagina before he ejaculates (also called coitus interruptus or pulling out) | Attempt to keep sperm from entering the vagina by having the guy ejaculate outside the vagina | 4 - 19% | NA |
The lower failure rate is more reliable however, 0%-failure-rate option will never be available. (Unless you practice abstinence or are sterilized.)
Thus, to take two options is usually suggested, such as Contraceptive Pill (or Patch) + Male Condom for extra safety.
Fertility awareness is a good basic knowledge of your body however, it's not reliable as for contraception since it depends on the regularity of the menstrual cycle. And it's easily changed by stress, environment, or body condition. Withdrawal method is not reliable either as sperms may be included in the pre-ejaculatory fluid.
Other contraceptive methods such as Spermicide, Diaphragm, Female Condom are not readily available in Singapore.
STI is another thing you have to consider when you have a sex. The only thing to prevent from the infection is a condom. So try to use a condom even though you already have another birth control method.
Also called as "morning after pill", one of the newest methods of birth control is emergency contraception, using drugs designed to prevent implantation of a fertilized ovum. Thus, you have to take it in 72 hours from the intercourse. While providing an after-the-fact option that did not exist before, Plan B One-Step, among the most widely available forms of emergency contraception, has a failure rate of about 12.5%. It is not available over the counter. You need a prescription from the clinic.
